Republishing old WordPress blog posts

Another tweet has inspired me to do a quick overview on how to republish old blog posts in WordPress.

We all have them – useful blog posts that are just as relevant now as they were when we wrote them months or even years ago, that might do well from a little update, perhaps, and to then be set loose upon your readers afresh.

I’m not suggesting we just regurgitate posts without due care, and of course you can simply direct people to the original post if that is more appropriate, but sometimes it makes sense to recycle that post and publish anew.

So – how to do that…

republishing an old blog post in WordPressIf you go to Posts, Edit and find your old post (list those “published” then filter by date, is one way to see what you have), review your content and update as you wish – check links and the latest information, for instance – then go to your Publish box, over on the top right, and Edit the Published on date to a new date and time, then Save and Schedule, you will successfully re-publish your old blog post.

Give it a go and let us know if you want a hand, or a screencast of the process.

  • Chris:

Doesn't this change the old post date on anything that has been linked to it, essentially throwing up a 404? What if you want to post it again as a new post on current date but same content?
