When WordPress updates fail

November 14, 2019 by Babs Leave a Comment

This is a quick video of what I do whenever a WordPress plugin update freezes the screen or throws me out and generally just does not work.

For this you will need access to your hosting control panel (often cpanel) and if this scares you a bit, we can do this for you, but you do need to provide that information.

Go into the File Manager, into the public_html folder and view the error_log – scroll to the bottom to see the most recent error – this will very often include the path to a plugin with a reason for the error. If you can confidently identify the plugin then you can remove its folder to a holding folder – watch the video for how to do this.

And often, this will resolve things. There will have been a conflict between a newly updated plugin with other things. So then you’ll want to review the functionality, finding an alternative plugin if necessary.

If you’re really not sure about doing this yourself, and I don’t blame you, then get in touch and we can see if we can help you.

Whatever you do, before any updates or changes to files – take a backup that you can rely on!
